The first G & S mark I could find is for Guthrie & Shier of Glasgow, Scotland. The list that includes their mark stretches from 1848 to 1903. Date letters are not shown with these marks.
There are 3 English firms whose initials may have been used in this way.
1) Gilbert & Spurrier, Ltd, Birmingham
2) Gilding & Silvering Co, Middlesex
3) Grinsell & Sons, London
but my books don't illustrate all of their marks.
